Carpet Bowls

Layout of the Mat

Carpet Bowls was devised as a scaled down version of indoor bowls and was designed to be suitable for playing in small halls. It is popular in many rural areas, particularly in the North East of England. The game is easy enough that people of all ages and skills can play.

The object is to get your balls (called woods) as close to the small ball (the jack) as possible. The woods are side-weighted and just to make it interesting, you must try to avoid hitting the 18” wooden block placed in the center of the mat, as it will send your ball out of the game. Depending on how you are holding the wood, it will curve left or right. Simple, yes. Easy, definitely not.

After a game, everyone shakes hands with each team member from both sides.
